A tranquil, picture-postcard village, Redmire epitomises the traditional Yorkshire Dales community and makes an ideal base for holidays for those who prefer to stay a little off the beaten track.
The Bolton Arms is everything you would expect from a country inn while The Old Town Hall offers comfortable accommodation, awarded five stars by enjoyEngland and complemented by first-class cuisine. The Jonas Centre can also provide self-catering accommodation in one of its 12 Scandinavian log cabins and is open all year round.
But, as well as peace and quiet, country walks and some spectacular views over Lower Wensleydale, Redmire has something a little extra – with it’s own station on the Wensleydale Railway.
The 16-mile line links the village with the markets in Leyburn and stations down in Leeming in the Vale of York – all serviced by venerable diesel and occasionally steam locomotives making several return trips each day.
Built in the 14th Century less than a mile from Redmire, Bolton Castle is steeped in history dating back to the Tudor dynasty with tales to tell of the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots and a Civil War siege. However, it also hosts numerous events through the year, including archery and falconry displays an boasts the Bolton Castle Boar Park.
There is evidence of an Iron Age settlement in the village.
