Gunnerside, an attractive little village 6 miles updale from Reeth, has a dog-friendly pub, the King's Head (with its own dog menu and dog beer!) two minutes from the cottage and Ghyllfoot Tearoom. A tearoom through the day, it also opens on Wednesday and Saturday evenings as a bistro, does curry takeaway on alternate Mondays and provides frozen "bistro-style" meals for you to heat up in the comfort of the cottage. There is also a little local museum, attached to the smithy, detailing changes in local lifestyles over the years.

The nearest shops are a small local shop in Muker (limited opening times off-peak), local shops in Reeth, 6 miles, and larger shops in Hawes, 11 miles, Richmond, 18 miles and a 24hr supermarket in Catterick Garrison, 17 miles.

Reeth is a bustling village which has a good little Friday market, organic bakery, garage, post office and selection of shops, tearooms, pubs, galleries and a museum.
